São Vicente Returns to Normal After Storm, Minister Says

Africa-Press – Cape verde. In an interview with Rádio Morabeza this Saturday, the Minister of Internal Administration, Paulo Rocha, assured that São Vicente is gradually recovering from the destruction caused by the recent tropical storm and that normalcy is beginning to be restored to the island.

When asked about the timeline for the start of water production and distribution, which was initially scheduled for Wednesday and later postponed, the minister stated that available information indicates that water collection will begin tomorrow, with distribution expected to begin between Wednesday and Thursday. “We are all eager for this to actually happen according to this schedule, so that they can effectively overcome all the problems,” he emphasized.

Regarding the mobilization of heavy equipment, the minister assured that there is currently no need to order machinery from abroad, as the island’s construction companies are fully mobilized.

“There’s a lot of machinery working, a lot of clearing has already been done, and at this moment there are no inaccessible areas, with the possible exception of Calhau, where machines were still operating yesterday,” he said, adding that reinforcements from some companies on other islands have arrived to speed up the work.

The minister also delivered a message of reassurance, stating that the immediate priority is focused on supporting those affected. “São Vicente is returning to normal. The main concern is for those who need immediate support, but other than that, life is returning to normal,” he assured.

Regarding the risk of new tropical waves, Paulo Rocha assured that the country remains on alert. “All people at risk have been warned, and some have been evacuated from their homes due to the risk of landslides if heavy rains occur. We have a significant contingent of the National Civil Protection Service mobilized in São Vicente,” he explained, expressing hope that the intensity of rainfall seen in recent days will not be repeated.

According to the minister, the essential thing now is to continue the process of rebuilding and recovering the island, while remaining vigilant in the face of adverse weather conditions that could still affect the archipelago.
