Africa-Press – Cape verde. Sea Week takes place from the 9th to the 15th of this month, on the island of Maio. The event will be attended by renowned athlete Mitú Monteiro, world kitesurfing champion, as well as other prominent Cape Verdean athletes, who will be on the island to explore the best places to practice water sports.

According to a note sent, Sea Week will offer immersion in a vibrant combination of nautical and cultural events, including a Gastronomic Festival, water sports competitions and various sports tournaments and nature activities.

The Maio 2025 Program marks a significant movement by bringing, for the first time, a week of sea-related activities to the island, promoting Maio as a destination of excellence for water sports and highlighting the opportunities of the blue economy in Cape Verde.

The same source emphasizes that Mitu Monteiro will share his life story with the young people of Maio and will take a tour of the island with the aim of showing Maio’s potential in terms of water sports as a reference for the blue economy.

“He will be accompanied by his family and sailors Hendrick Lopes and Dianira Lopes. Other highlights of the program include a multi-sport event and crafts fair in the city of Porto Ingles on Saturday, and the National Open Water Swimming Championship, with the Pau Seco-Calheta crossing, and the Terra Mar Gastronomic Festival, in Calheta on Sunday.” , highlights.

Activities from other institutions and projects will also be included, such as the IDEA Club, Liceu Horace Silva students and the People and Planet project.

The event has the support of the IDJ, the Maio Agriculture and Environment Department and the institutional support of the Decade of the Oceans.

The Maio 2025 Program is led by the Maio City Council and implemented in partnership with the Marquês de Valle Flôr Institute – IMVF, the Mértola Heritage Defense Association – ADPM Mértola and the Maio Biodiversity Foundation – FMB – Maio Biodiversity Foundation, with the financing of the European Union Delegation – EU in Cape Verde.
