Africa-Press – Cape verde. The executive director of the National Marine Conservation Network of Cape Verde (TAOLA+) said this Thursday that the network intends to strengthen the monitoring of marine areas, adapting to current times with the application of new technologies.

Leno dos Passos spoke to Inforpress to present the network’s activity agenda for this year and the coming months.

He stated that a meeting is scheduled with all 17 members of the network who work in environmental conservation in the country and other national and international partners to share knowledge and ideas on new forms of marine conservation.

He added that the focus will be on marine conservation, centered on protected marine areas.

According to the same source, they will also present management models and discuss improvements, in order to carry out monitoring, that is, to have a single monitoring system to be used by all members.

Leno Paços said that these are issues to be addressed at a network meeting that will take place this year on Maio Island, from April 13 to 17.

“Our goal is to bring the issue of fishing and sea turtle conservation to the discussion, to understand the best conservation strategy, that is, to understand the current challenges, given that times have changed and it is necessary to adapt,” he indicated, citing the possibility of using new technologies to advance and improve the work.

On the other hand, he stated that the action plan, which is valid until 2030, has been approved, outlining four strategic objectives.

“We started by strengthening the capacity of the network and its members, at the institutional and technical levels, promoting collaborative work related to data sharing among members and partners,” he mentioned.

According to Leno dos Passos, the network is working to secure resources for the implementation of projects related to strengthening the capacity of its members and raising public awareness about conservation, protection, and environmental issues.

As he added, the three projects have been submitted and are awaiting approval, but at the moment they are working to secure support for seabird conservation projects to reinforce conservation efforts.
