Union denounces socio-political labor situation that “is not going well” in the country

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The president of the General Industry, Food, Civil Construction and Services Union (Siacsa) said this Monday that the socio-political labor situation in the country “is not going well” due to the “deliberate intention” of some social actors.

Gilberto Lima’s complaint was made in Praia, at a press conference, and the union leader pointed out difficulties experienced by city council employees, nurses and prison officers.

“The socio-political labor situation in the country is not going well. It is not going well because of the deliberate intention of some social actors to provoke labor conflicts here and there throughout the country and even create chaos in some sectors of activity”, reinforced the president of Siacsa.

For the trade unionist, this socio-political labor situation will continue to be bad as long as workers, politicians and civil society in general do not gain the awareness to know how to distinguish and understand where the epicenter of all labor demands is, which is being witnessed at this moment.

“The epicentre of current labour demands has to do with municipal councils, in the equipment and observance of the PCFR, as well as existing precarious contracts and also the Ministries of Justice and Health in the treatment of newly trained agents and public tenders for nurses”, he indicated.

Gilberto Lima questioned the “very long delay” in fulfilling the Plan, Position, Functions and Remunerations (PCFR) and three promotions that were overdue in the municipal chambers, and the placement of employees on the shelves by them.

The union also pointed out that “illegal discounts” are being made on expired and unobserved promotions in different municipal chambers, such as those in Boa Vista, Praia, Tarrafal, Santa Catarina and Fogo.

The president of Siacsa also contested the employment situation at Boa Vista City Council, whose employees’ debts related to salary updates date from 2019 to 2020 and from 2023 to 2024, as well as the non-observance of the PCFR in its increase of two thousand escudos.

The official also referred to the non-compliance with the agreement reached between the newly trained agents regarding the payment of salary differences estimated at 250 contos and to each of the 99 workers recently trained by the Ministry of Justice.

“How is it still possible to understand the competition of nurses hired within the scope of Covid-19, how can we doubt professional experiences of more than four, five or more years of work provided?” questioned Gilberto Lima.

According to the union leader, these issues go beyond all desirable limits, so workers will soon take the measures they deem viable for this purpose.

He also criticized other unions for “not guaranteeing” workers’ rights and for their “total silence” in the face of these situations of precarious employment.

“The unions are not having enough strength to enforce workers’ rights. This is because the unions are in a different situation. The unions are doing something other than the fundamental issue of workers’ rights,” Gilberto Lima concluded.
