Africa-Press – Eswatini. The national football team, Sihlangu, has become the talk of the town after securing a goalless draw against the esteemed and star-studded Cameroon.
Predicted to easily overpower Sihlangu, the Cameroonian side encountered unexpected resistance as the local lads displayed determination and tenacity to achieve this remarkable result. Currently, Cameroon tops Group D of the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, while Sihlangu finds itself languishing at the bottom with just one point secured against the Cameroonians in a six-team log.
What is particularly astonishing is that Cameroon is ranked 49th in the latest FIFA World Rankings, while Sihlangu holds a position at 159th. This outcome is anticipated to positively impact the local team’s ranking when the updates are released.
The Cameroon squad features players valued in the millions, including Manchester United goalkeeper André Onana from the English Premier League and Brentford striker Bryan Mbeumo among others.
According to a prominent global publication, bbc.com, the draw was described as shocking.
“Cameroon were held to a surprising draw away to the unfancied Eswatini as African qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup resumed on Wednesday. Bryan Mbeumo came closest to breaking the deadlock for the Indomitable Lions when the Brentford forward struck the woodwork with a curling effort from distance in the first half. Eswatini, ranked 159th in the world—110 places below their central African counterparts—managed to hold on in the second half, with Mlamuli Makhanya tipping a header from Cameroon captain Vincent Aboubakar over the crossbar,” reads part of their article.
Cafonline.com noted: “Cameroon Frustrated in Eswatini Stalemate. The Indomitable Lions were left frustrated after being held to a 0-0 draw by bottom-placed Eswatini in Group D. Despite dominating possession, Cameroon struggled to find a breakthrough. This result keeps them at the top of the group with nine points from five matches, while it grants Eswatini their first point of the campaign.”
Other publications that covered the story include Africanfootball.com and Soccernet Nigeria, among others.
