CATTLE BYRE EXTENDED FOR INCWALA

Africa-Press – Eswatini. The cattle byre at Ludzidzini Royal Residence has been extended to accommodate the growing number of people attending this year’s Incwala ceremony, reflecting the continued significance of the sacred cultural event to the Kingdom of Eswatini.

The expansion was undertaken following a directive from His Majesty King Mswati III, in response to the increasing number of emaSwati and visitors who have shown interest in participating in the annual ceremony. Over the years, attendance at Incwala has steadily grown, with people from across the country and beyond gathering to witness and take part in the nation’s most revered cultural event.

The Little Incwala began more than nine days ago, starting on Saturday, 20 December 2025, at Ludzidzini Royal Residence. The ceremony commenced when regiments from Ngabezweni Royal Residence travelled to Ludzidzini to participate in the traditional rites that mark the beginning of the Incwala season. Upon their arrival, they were joined by other regiments already gathered at the royal residence, officially setting the proceedings in motion.

In the days that followed, the Incwala rituals were also observed at other royal residences across the country, including Ngabezweni and Mbangweni in the Nhlangano area. These ceremonies form an essential part of the spiritual and cultural preparations leading to the main Incwala, which symbolises unity, renewal, and respect for tradition.

Throughout this period, Her Majesty the Indlovukazi has presided over the ceremonies at Ludzidzini, ensuring continuity and adherence to tradition while the King performed related rites at other royal residences. The King is also expected to perform the Incwala dance at Buhleni Royal Residence as part of the ongoing observances.

The main Incwala ceremony will take place after His Majesty commissions Ingaja to cut the sacred shrub, lusekwane. Traditionally, this task is assigned to Ingaja from Buhleni Royal Residence, who then join fellow Ingaja from various chiefdoms across the country. Once assembled, they proceed to collect the sacred shrub, marking a pivotal moment in the Incwala calendar.

Historically, the gathering of Ingaja signified the official commencement of the Incwala celebrations, drawing thousands of people from across Eswatini and beyond. The expansion of the cattle byre this year underscores the growing significance of the ceremony and the continued reverence with which Emaswati uphold their cultural heritage.
