Africa-Press – Eswatini. His Majesty King Mswati III has issued a firm directive that drug shortages in Eswatini’s health facilities must come to an end immediately, signaling a decisive new chapter for the country’s healthcare system.
Delivering the Speech from the Throne for 2026, the King emphasized that a productive nation is built on a healthy population, and assured the country that urgent action is underway to resolve medicine supply challenges once and for all.
“We have heard the major outcry over drug shortages in our health facilities,” His Majesty declared, underscoring Government’s commitment to ensuring that from now onwards, such shortages should stop.
The royal directive places the well-being of emaSwati at the center of national priorities. The King stressed that every citizen seeking medical treatment must find the necessary medicines upon arrival at any health facility, particularly in cases requiring immediate attention.
He called for all possible measures to be employed to avert the recurrence of shortages in the future, highlighting the need for accountability, efficiency, and improved coordination within the health system.
Beyond immediate relief, the King pointed to the importance of building a sustainable drug sourcing and supply chain framework. He said the recent challenges must serve as valuable lessons in strengthening strategies that guarantee consistent availability of medicines across the country.
His Majesty further called for effective long-term plans spanning the next 40 to 50 years to ensure that future generations inherit systems and structures that operate efficiently and effectively.
The strong message from the Throne has been widely welcomed as a clear demonstration of leadership and responsiveness. It reinforces Government’s resolve to safeguard public health, restore confidence in health services, and deliver a reliable, people-centered healthcare system.
With the royal order now issued, the focus shifts to swift implementation — ensuring that every clinic, health centre and hospital across the Kingdom is fully stocked and ready to serve the nation without interruption.
