The nationwide schools soccer tournament, now in full swing, has brought together secondary school students from across Eswatini in a competition designed to identify and nurture young talent while promoting sportsmanship and healthy competition. Matches are being played across all four regions, culminating in the highly anticipated semi-finals in Hhohho, where the nation’s best-performing teams will compete for top honours.
The tournament is made possible through a partnership between ESSA, corporate sponsors including Joma Sports South Africa, Websters, My Wardrobe Exclusive Suits, and Andile Footwear, and the Ministry of Education and Sports, combining financial support, playing kits, and technical expertise to ensure a professional and fair competition. Organisers have also introduced measures such as passport verification to safeguard fairness and integrity, ensuring that every learner has an equal opportunity to excel on the field.
Joma Sports South Africa has contributed full playing kits and additional support, while Websters and My Wardrobe Exclusive Suits added financial backing. Andile Footwear pledged rewards for outstanding performers, including soccer boots for both the man of the match and top goal scorers. “We are proud to support the growth of school sports and help nurture the next generation of athletes in Eswatini,” said Instacash Managing Director Mandla “Cheeks” Nxumalo.
Plans are also underway to expand the tournament’s inclusivity by introducing netball, with kit support for girls and technical guidance from North-West University to strengthen competitive structures. ESSA Chief Executive Officer Zakhele Myeni highlighted the association’s 15 branches and emphasised the importance of tracking talent while promoting fairness: “We want every learner, regardless of background, to have a chance to showcase their skills and compete on a level playing field.”
Government, through the Ministry of Education and Sports, reaffirmed its support for the initiative, highlighting the role of physical education in developing well-rounded learners and future athletes. Officials stressed the importance of safe, non-violent sporting environments that complement academic priorities.
With semi-finals on the horizon, anticipation continues to mount as schools, players, and communities prepare to witness some of Eswatini’s brightest young talents in action. The tournament is expected to leave a lasting impact on school sports, inspiring teamwork, determination, and a culture of fair play across the country.
