Africa-Press – Eswatini. There were more babies born this Christmas compared to the previous year.
A total of 75 babies were born in the country’s health facilities compared to 65 babies last year, while in 2021 there were 108. The number consists of 38 girls and 37 boys. The babies were delivered between midnight on December 24, 2023 and 11:59pm on December 25. The Good Shepherd Catholic Hospital delivered 14 babies, which was the highest number, while Medisun and Manzini clinics delivered only one baby each.

The Minister of Health, Mduduzi Matsebula, visited the Pigg’s Peak Government Hospital, where he presented gifts to the newborns, appreciating that they were born on a very special day, when Jesus Christ was also born into this world. Matsebula added that the country was working hard to reduce maternal mortality among women and children. He stated that their strategic partners contributed equipment, adding that the ministry received around E7 million worth of items in the past month. He said it was the ministry’s priority to reduce the maternal mortality among women and children in the country. Matsebula wished the mothers and other admitted patients a happy Christmas. Senior Medical Officer (SMO) at the Pigg’s Peak Government Hospital, Dr Sukoluhle Simelane, appreciated the minister and his team for choosing to visit the hospital to welcome the newly-born babies. Simelane said they were able to deliver a number of babies.
