Africa-Press – Eswatini. The African Union Commissioner, Josefa Sacko, Thursday in Addis Ababa asked the African Development Bank (AfDB) for financial support for the implementation of projects related to nutrition and food security.

According to the diplomat, who held a meeting with the Vice-President of the AfDB, Beth Dunford, at the AU headquarters, food security is of paramount importance as it constitutes a “battle focus” to be carried out both at regional and international levels. national level, in the framework of the implementation of the recommendations of the common position of Africa and of the United Nations Summit.

With a view to ensuring accelerated and sustained economic growth that leads to the realization of the aspirations of Agenda 2063, Josefa Sacko informed that the AU commission is stepping up efforts to achieve environmental sustainability, climate resilience of African economies and communities, for the modernization of agriculture, which will increase productivity and production.

For the implementation of the decade of action to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030, decision-making and actions on climate in development sectors such as agriculture, energy, health, disaster risk reduction are critical, among others, but, for this, the mobilization of financial resources has been a weak point.

Josefa Sacko made it known that most African economies are based on agriculture, including societies and communities that are heavily dependent on the environment and natural resources, implying challenges with regard, mainly, to vulnerabilities arising from unsustainable management of the environment, effects of climate and climate change, population growth and low technological development.

Regarding the Blue Economy, he assured that the commission had engaged in discussions with the AfDB and recognized the mutual interest in advancing various sectors, as well as ensuring adequate funding for continental projects.

With regard to the environment, the Commissioner considered it urgent to obtain resources to be able to develop a comprehensive AU environmental strategy to guide efforts related to it, including the circular economy, as well as support to facilitate the work of the AU in the ” Plastics Ban Campaign for a Pollution Free Africa”

Josefa Sacko said that Africa’s leadership remains steadfast in its commitment to the pan-African vision enshrined in Agenda 2063. “We are proud and have no doubt that our collaboration and partnership will only be strengthened for the good of Africa and all its citizens”,reinforced.
