ATHLETES WITH DISABILITIES SHINE IN MBABANE MARATHON

Africa-Press – Eswatini. Determination knew no boundaries on 22 November 2025, as more than 2 400 athletes — young and old, able-bodied and differently-abled — took to the streets of the capital for the 7th Mbabane Marathon. The event showcased the true spirit of inclusivity, demonstrating that courage, not physical ability, is what carries every athlete to the finish line.

In a heart-warming display of resilience and community support, 10 learners with disabilities from St Joseph’s Primary School joined the 5km race. Guided by their dedicated teachers, Cabulile Dlamini and Lyza Magongo, the children — aged between 9 and 18 — took on the challenge with pride and excitement. The participating learners were Mpilwenhle Hlophe (9), Nkosinathi Msibi (18), Lindokuhle Masilela (17), Success Sihlongonyane (10), Malwande Ndzimandze (12), Fundizwi Malaza (11), Owenkosi Vilakati (16), Sekuhle Dlamini (15), Siwakhile Gama (11) and Sibahle Maziya (11).

Their participation was made possible through the support of the Eswatini Sport Council, which provided transportation, and the Mbabane City Council, which ensured smooth and accessible logistics. This collaboration marked an important commitment to ensuring that athletes with disabilities are meaningfully included in mainstream sporting events.

Twelve-year-old Malwande Ndzimandze expressed his excitement after completing the race: “This was my first time running in a big race like this, and I loved every moment.” His words reflected the joy and sense of achievement felt by many of the young participants.

The marathon also welcomed other athletes with disabilities from outside the school. Among them was wheelchair racer Vusie Khumalo and visually impaired runner Lucky Mkhonta, who competed in the T11 category. Both athletes were accompanied by Maxwell Ngwenya, Vice President of the Eswatini Paralympic Committee.

Ngwenya praised the effort and determination displayed throughout the event: “It is inspiring to see these athletes giving their best on the course. Being here with them and witnessing their commitment reminds me why inclusion matters in sport.”

The 2025 edition of the Mbabane Marathon was proudly sponsored by MTN MoMo alongside several partners, whose support ensured that both able-bodied and differently-abled athletes could participate fully in this landmark event.

As the sun set over the capital, the 7th Mbabane Marathon stood as a powerful testament to inclusion, unity, and the unbreakable human spirit. Whether they walked, ran, or pushed through the course, every athlete proved that the finish line belongs to all.
