Mozambique’s Costa do Sol (CDS) capitalised on two defensive errors to beat Young Buffaloes Ladies 2-1 in the CAF Women’s Champions League/COSAFA qualifiers yesterday.
Despite dominating the game, fouls inside the box cost Buffaloes dearly in their first Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA) Group B match, which also serves as the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Champions League qualifier. The game was played at Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium in South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal (KZN).
Salvage
The army side’s goal scored by Tenanile Ngcamphalala just before half-time was not enough to salvage a point in the regional showdown. CDS drew first blood just six minutes into the game after benefitting from a foul that saw Sikhanyiso Magagula being booked for handling the ball just outside the box. Ines Chingueleze took the free kick and forged some few passes that saw Marlene Janeiro converting with a brilliant finish. Albertina Pondja doubled the lead in the 18th minute from the spot kick after Marlene was fouled advancing inside the box by the team’s captain Simangele Sikhondze. Not demotivated, the Fisiwe Hlophe’s charges fought back and tried to penetrate the solid defence to pull one back before half time.
Restored
Just three minutes before half-time, Buffaloes’ hopes were restored when Tenanile converted from a corner kick delivered by Sikhanyiso Magagula.
With some hopes restored, they tried effortlessly in the second half to restore parity but in vain, which saw the game drag to the final whistle with the one goal difference. As a result, they will seek redemption tomorrow against formidable opponents Mamelodi Sundowns. Sundowns took on Olympic de Moroni late yesterday. Notably is that the group winners and runners –up will advance to the semi-finals.
