Africa-Press – Eswatini. Residents of Dulini in Shiselweni II are optimistic that development will finally reach their community following the government’s road rehabilitation project. The project, which began in June and is expected to be completed in four months, aims to improve accessibility and stimulate economic growth in the area.
Funded through the Micro Projects Programme with approximately E3.5 million, the road project reflects the government’s mandate to prioritise development in rural areas. The first phase involves concreting 500 metres of the road, followed by regraveling 2 kilometres. Later, a bridge will be constructed across the river near the schools, improving accessibility and safety for residents.
Residents of Dulini welcomed the government’s focus on rural development. They said it was encouraging to see their community included, noting that such projects show a commitment to improving access to services and economic opportunities in remote areas.
Indvuna Yenkhundla highlighted the challenges the community faced during the rainy season when vehicles could not use the roads. Residents expressed hope that the improved road will enable companies to operate in the area and boost economic activities.
One resident shared the difficulties they encountered in accessing basic services, such as transporting the sick to hospitals, and even seeking assistance from police officers, who often could not reach the community due to poor road conditions. Another resident emphasised that schools had been particularly affected, with teachers and children struggling to reach classrooms, and expressed gratitude for the improvements.
In addition to improving transport and access to services, the road project is expected to have a broader impact on the social and economic life of Dulini. Better roads make it easier for farmers to bring their produce to markets, for small businesses to operate, and for community members to attend social and cultural events. The improvement of infrastructure is often seen as a key step in attracting investment and encouraging new projects in rural areas, which could further benefit the residents.
The community praised the Micro Projects Programme for prioritising their area and noted that future developments, including Rural Development Fund (RDF) initiatives, will rely heavily on the road remaining in good condition. Residents are confident that the rehabilitation project will not only enhance transport but also create opportunities for better services and economic growth in Dulini.
