Africa-Press – Eswatini. The Eswatini Football Association (EFA) has announced that the upcoming 2025/2026 MTN Premier League season will expand to include 16 teams. This decision has led to the introduction of playoffs that offer a unique promotion opportunity for several clubs, according to EFA CEO Pat Vilakati.
Vilakati explained that the expansion means the last two teams in the current MTN Premier League will have a chance to fight for their place in the top tier through playoffs. Meanwhile, the third and fourth-placed teams from the First Division will also compete for promotion, creating a competitive pathway for clubs aspiring to reach the premier league.
The playoffs will feature Sidvwashini United facing off against Madlenya, and Lozitha Hotspurs taking on Tabankulu Celtics. The winners of these matches will secure their spots in the MTN Premier League for the new season.
“This playoff system is a direct result of the EFA’s decision to increase the league size to 16 teams,” Vilakati said. “It not only gives teams at the bottom of the Premier League a chance to maintain their status but also rewards strong performers in the First Division with an opportunity to move up.”
This expansion and playoff format aim to intensify competition and enhance the quality of football in Eswatini by providing more clubs with a stake in the top flight. The EFA hopes this will boost local football development and increase fan engagement across the country.
