Africa-Press – Eswatini. According to a new World Bank report, Eswatini’s economy is expected to grow by 5 per cent in 2025, signalling a strong recovery from years of economic strain.
This was revealed on July 31, 2025, by the Minister of Economic Planning and Development, Hon. Thambo Gina, during the official launch of the Eswatini Economic Update held at the UN House in Mbabane. The event was hosted in collaboration with the Eswatini Government and the World Bank Group.
Digitalization is anticipated to play a pivotal role in Eswatini’s future development. Important lessons can be drawn from the success stories of small, geographically isolated economies such as Estonia, Mauritius, and Singapore, where digital transformation has been vital to growth and job creation.
Minister Gina welcomed the growth projection but emphasized that sustained progress will depend on Eswatini’s full embrace of digital transformation.
“Digital transformation is no longer optional; it is essential if we are to build resilience, create jobs, and improve public service delivery,” he said.
The report, themed Harnessing the Potential of Digital Technologies for Growth and Job Creation, highlights both achievements and remaining challenges. While Eswatini has made strides in expanding broadband access and e-government platforms, issues such as limited rural connectivity, low digital literacy, and weak support for tech innovation remain.
Minister Gina reaffirmed the government’s commitment to incorporating the report’s findings into national development plans.
“Whether in education, agriculture, or health, digital tools will play a major role in driving our development agenda,” he added.
The report also stresses the need for stronger collaboration between the government, private sector, and development partners to build a more inclusive digital economy.
As Eswatini looks to the future, the 5 per cent growth forecast presents a hopeful outlook provided the country prioritizes innovation and ensures equitable access to digital opportunities.
