Africa-Press – Eswatini. The Eswatini Spelling Bee continues to grow as a national platform that not only celebrates academic excellence but also builds confidence, communication skills, and future-ready learners. In a recent display of incredible talent, the competition showcased the brilliance of various categories at the Mbabane Library, where young scholars demonstrated that the Kingdom’s future is in bright hands.
Leading the charge in the Mbabane regional leg were the first-place winners from each category: Nala Mthethwa (Category 5–6, Trinity Christian), Mkhonta Ubenatsi (Category 7–8, Trinity Christian), Thandolubanzi Mathe (Category 9–10, Evangelical Primary), and Wamukelwe Zwane (Category 11–14, Usutu Forest School International). These bright minds will be joined at the national finals by the top performers from the Good News Primary and FEA Helemisi regional competitions.
The finalists from these three regions will face off against one another, bringing together a diverse group of elite spellers from across the Manzini and Hhohho regions. Their achievement is a testament to the hard work put in by students, teachers, and parents alike, as they navigate the rigorous journey of mastering the English language. This success reflects the growing standard of education and the competitive spirit within the Kingdom’s schools.
The Eswatini Spelling Bee is a registered non-profit organisation dedicated to more than just memorizing letters; it is a movement aimed at holistic child development. According to the competition’s management, the initiative is deeply committed to developing English vocabulary, improving public speaking skills, and helping learners overcome stage fright.
“Our mission is to empower the next generation of leaders in the Kingdom of Eswatini through language excellence and confidence-building,” stated the Eswatini Spelling Bee Management. This vision ensures that the youth are prepared for the professional world and social leadership roles.
Founded in 2024, with its first official competition in 2025, the 2026 edition marks the second year of implementation. The project has already shown significant growth, attracting primary and secondary students, as well as individual participants across five age categories ranging from 5 to 17 years.
The competition is conducted in stages throughout the academic year to maintain engagement and provide ample time for preparation. Following the successful regional events already completed, the primary school circuit is set to expand further across the nation. Upcoming regional competitions are scheduled for May 14 in Siteki, May 21 in Siphofaneni, and May 28 in Nhlangano.
These events will culminate in the National Primary Finals on July 2 in Manzini. This nationwide reach ensures that talented children from all four regions of the Kingdom have an equal opportunity to shine. The high school competition is also gathering momentum, with registration remaining open until May 20, 2026.
High school regionals will kick off in June across Pigg’s Peak, Mbabane, Manzini, Siteki, Siphofaneni, and Nhlangano, with their national finals set for July 3, 2026, also in Manzini. While the competition continues to thrive, management is calling for more support to ensure every child in the Kingdom can participate.
Currently, Spur Eswatini has stepped forward as a prize sponsor for the finals, but the organisation is appealing to other potential partners to join the cause. A key long-term objective for the management is to identify and nurture top spellers who will go on to represent the Kingdom of Eswatini at international platforms such as the African Spelling Bee.
The impact of this initiative goes beyond the classroom, as it encourages teamwork, discipline, and a sense of healthy competition. As the “Road to the Finals” continues, the Eswatini Spelling Bee stands as a beacon of hope and a powerful reminder that with the right support, Emaswati learners can compete and shine on any stage in the world.
