Eswatini'S Digital Future: ESCCOM Invests in Young Women

Africa-Press – Eswatini. The Eswatini Communications Commission (ESCCOM) has reaffirmed its commitment to closing the gender gap in the technology sector by awarding full scholarships to two young women pursuing careers in Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

The awards were presented today, 29 October 2025, during a ceremony held at ESCCOM’s Head Office in Mbabane. The 2025 beneficiaries, Tembuso Ngwenya and Siphesihle Shongwe, will study Computer Science and Electrical and Electronic Engineering respectively at the University of Eswatini.

Speaking at the handover, the Minister for Information, Communication and Technology commended ESCCOM for its sustained investment in developing female talent in the ICT sector.

“When our girls are encouraged, supported, and empowered to participate in ICT, the entire nation benefits,” said the Minister. “This initiative is not only about education—it is about ensuring that Eswatini achieves full digital transformation by including every voice and every talent.”

The Minister further urged the recipients to embrace their studies with passion and discipline, noting that they are stepping into fields that define the future through innovations in cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and renewable energy.

“Your footsteps are not ordinary; they are trailblazing footsteps, opening doors for the next generation of girls,” she added.

ESCCOM Chief Executive Officer, Mvilawemphi Dlamini, highlighted that the Girls in ICT Sponsorship is one of the Commission’s flagship programmes, designed to complement government’s national digital empowerment agenda. With this latest intake, six young women are now being supported under the initiative.

Dlamini explained that the scholarship covers tuition fees, accommodation, a monthly stipend, and a laptop, ensuring a holistic approach to academic and personal success.

“This sponsorship is not merely a gift—it is both a commitment and a responsibility,” said Dlamini. “We expect our beneficiaries to seize this opportunity and perform to the best of their abilities. ESCCOM will continue to monitor academic progress to ensure accountability and excellence.”

He also encouraged parents and guardians to remain actively involved in supporting their children’s educational journeys, noting that mentorship and moral support are critical for success.

According to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), women currently make up less than 30% of the global ICT workforce, a figure even lower across Africa. ESCCOM’s investment in young women’s education seeks to address this disparity and build a more inclusive digital economy.

“To Siphesihle and Tembuso—you are ambassadors of possibility,” concluded the CEO. “Carry the hopes of your families, communities, and nation with pride and determination. The future of Eswatini’s digital innovation depends on young people like you.”
