Africa-Press – Eswatini. Meet Mbali Mpanza, a third-year Medical Laboratory Science student at Eswatini Medical Christian University who’s proving that hustle and heart go hand-in-hand – one candy bag at a time. The 22-year-old from Mankayane (Kumusi) is making waves on and off campus with her booming small business, Sweet Tooth Fairy Treats.
What started as a way to top up her student allowance has quickly turned into one of the campus’s most talked-about side hustles. From fizzy favourites to chewy classics, Mbali’s candy packs have become a go-to treat for students, lecturers, and even customers from outside the university.
“I needed extra cash for basics – toiletries, transport, lunch,” she says. “I wanted something easy to manage that wouldn’t interfere with my studies – and who doesn’t love candy?”
Her brand, Sweet Tooth Fairy Treats, is exactly what the name suggests – a sweet escape. Mbali curates custom mixes of popular candies, tailoring packages for every craving. Whether you want to share with friends or enjoy a solo sugar rush, she’s got you covered.
And this isn’t her first dance with business. “I’ve been trying out small hustles since high school,” she shares. “This one just stuck because it’s simple, fun, and keeps me motivated to show up at school daily.”
What’s more, Mbali’s business has turned her into something of a mini celeb on campus. “Some classmates wait for end-of-month orders; others message me with custom requests. Even lecturers are fans,” she laughs. “It’s more than sales – it’s about connection.”
The hustle has helped her sharpen more than just her business sense. “I’ve learned to listen, be patient, and communicate better – especially when someone’s buying on credit,” she jokes.
Mbali’s journey has also inspired other students to explore their own ideas. Her advice is; “Do something you love. That passion will carry you on slow days and give you energy when studying gets tough.”
And she’s not slowing down anytime soon. You can catch her candy creations on Instagram and TikTok under Sweet Tooth Fairy Treats, or order via WhatsApp at 7963 4180 / call 7848 7828 or 7920 8693.
With ambition as her fuel and candy as her calling card, Mbali Mpanza is schooling us all on how to make the grind a little sweeter.
