Africa-Press – Eswatini. The Government of Eswatini continues to make significant strides in strengthening the national health system, in line with the call from Sibaya for improved access to quality and affordable healthcare for all Emaswati, according to Prime Minister Russell Mmiso Dlamini.

Delivering his End-of-Year address on December 30, 2025, at the Private and Cabinet Offices in Mbabane, the Prime Minister said Government did this to respond to the concerns by the people, who stated that medication was not there in the country’s health facilities. Through strategic investments, policy reforms and infrastructure development, Government has reaffirmed its commitment to building a resilient and inclusive healthcare system that meets the needs of the population.

Expanding and Upgrading Health Infrastructure

In response to growing demand for improved health services, Dlamini said Government undertook extensive upgrades and construction of key health facilities across the country. Major improvements were carried out at Pigg’s Peak Hospital, Ndunayithini, Mankayane and Mfishane, significantly enhancing service delivery in both urban and rural areas. These upgrades have improved patient care, reduced congestion, and strengthened the overall healthcare network.

In addition, the Prime Minister said Government established a medical liquid oxygen storage and supply facility to support hospitals with reliable oxygen access. Critical medical equipment was also procured, including modern CT scanners for Mbabane and Manzini Government Hospitals, as well as a new incinerator to improve medical waste management. A cancer tissue processor was also acquired with the support of the Government of Taiwan, enhancing diagnostic capacity and improving cancer care services.

Advancing Specialised Healthcare Services

Following a directive from His Majesty King Mswati III, Government formulated the necessary policy framework to support the establishment of a world-class private cancer hospital in Manzini. This facility, which is 100 per cent locally owned, marks a historic milestone as the first hospital in the country to offer radiation-based cancer treatment. Its establishment represents a major step forward in reducing the need for patients to seek specialised care outside the country.

Strengthening Disease Prevention and Treatment

Through the Ministry of Health and the National Emergency Response Council on HIV and AIDS (NERCHA), Government rolled out Lenacapavir, a long-acting HIV prevention medication that offers protection for up to six months per injection. This initiative is expected to significantly reduce new HIV infections, particularly among young people, and is provided free of charge to Emaswati.

The Government also acknowledged the invaluable support of the United States of America, whose partnership has strengthened HIV prevention efforts, including a new E4.1 billion compact aimed at enhancing public health outcomes.

Improving Medicine Availability and Health Systems

Notable improvements have been recorded in the availability of medicines across public health facilities. Government also constructed new lodging facilities for renal patients at Mbabane Government Hospital, easing the burden on patients and their families. Furthermore, the enactment of the Eswatini Medical Supplies Agency Bill, 2025, will transform the Central Medical Stores into a semi-autonomous agency, improving efficiency in procurement, storage and distribution of medicines.

Through these comprehensive interventions, Government continues to strengthen the health system, ensuring accessible, efficient and quality healthcare for all Emaswati.
