Africa-Press – Eswatini. The Minister of Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs Bongani Nzima has called for a national mind set shift on Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), urging that it be recognised not as a fallback option, but as a respected and strategic pathway to success for young people.

He was speaking during the 2025 World Youth Skills Day commemoration, held under the national theme “Repositioning TVET as a First Choice for Youth.” The event brought together government, youth, development partners, and TVET institutions in a shared vision for skills development.

Nzima emphasised that countries prioritising TVET have achieved better employment outcomes, reduced inequality, and improved competitiveness. He said Eswatini must now follow that path to create sustainable opportunities for its youth.

“This is not the time to treat technical education as a backup option,” he said. “It is a foundation for innovation, enterprise, and independence. Our economy depends on a skilled and empowered youth.”

The Minister highlighted that youth unemployment in Eswatini remains above 58%, with even higher levels among rural and female youth. He described this as a serious concern that demands urgent action.

He applauded the efforts of the Eswatini National Youth Council (ENYC) and the European Union for their role in strengthening the TVET ecosystem. The EU–Eswatini Multiannual Indicative Programme (MIP) 2021–2027 supports youth employability and long-term resilience.

Nzima stressed the importance of aligning training programmes with labour market needs. He urged institutions to integrate digital skills, green innovation, and entrepreneurship into their curricula to prepare youth for future jobs.

He also called for more youth involvement in decision-making processes. “Young people must not be bystanders they should help shape policies and programmes that impact their lives.”

Nzima closed by encouraging all stakeholders to champion youth empowerment. “Let us open doors of mentorship and opportunity. Together, we can build a confident, skilled, and future-ready generation.”
