Africa-Press – Eswatini. Government, in partnership with World Vision Eswatini, has officially commissioned the Ekukhanyeni Water Scheme at Nkiliji under Ekukhanyeni Inkhundla, ushering in a new era of clean and accessible water for thousands of rural residents.

The commissioning took place on September 24, 2025, at Ekukhanyeni Inkhundla. It was attended by Minister for Tinkhundla Administration and Development Sikhumbuzo Dlamini, while Minister of Housing and Urban Development and Acting Minister for Natural Resources and Energy Appolo Maphalala officially commissioned the water system.

The project, funded by World Vision to the tune of E5 million with support from its offices in Germany and Italy, marks a major milestone in government’s drive to ensure safe water access for all citizens.

The scheme forms part of the broader Ekukhanyeni Area Programme, which has spanned 16 years and delivered vital improvements in five communities, including schools and health facilities.

Acting Minister for Natural Resources and Energy Appolo Maphalala described the development as transformative. He highlighted that access to safe water in the constituency has risen from 46.7% in 2010 to 76% in 2025.

“This water scheme has reduced the burden on women and children who used to walk long distances for unsafe water, improving health, education, and child protection outcomes,” he said.

The Acting Minister further noted that the initiative is part of a comprehensive effort that includes 13 protected springs, boreholes, and sanitation facilities within the Inkhundla.

“We are delighted to see how this project has changed lives and strengthened the well-being of our people, especially vulnerable children,” he added.

Maphalala commended the resilience of the Ekukhanyeni community and the strong collaboration among local leadership, government ministries, and World Vision Eswatini, which ensured the successful delivery of the water scheme.

Minister of Tinkhundla Administration and Development Sikhumbuzo Dlamini also emphasized government’s commitment to continue working with development partners to improve service delivery in rural areas.
