MBABANE Highlanders cruised to a 2-0 win over the struggling Manzini Wanderers in crunch MTN Premier League clash played at Somhlolo National Stadium last night.

The result helped the ‘Black Bull’ jump to second spot and further condemned the wasteful ‘Weslians’ to their third straight defeat through a Musa Dlamini and Philani Mkhonto goals on each half.

The game had started at a high tempo and promised lots of action but none of the sides showed any real attacking threat.

It was not until the 15th minute when Highlanders’ Kenneth Moloto broke free on a counter that the match began to pick up as he was brought down for a free kick.

Target

Wanderers midfielder Sibonginkhosi Dlamini hit the first shot on target in the 19th minute to test the holidaying ‘Bull’ goal minder Khanyakwezwe Shabalala. Next was the experienced Thando Langa who tested Khanyakwezwe from outside the box with a rasping shot.

The ‘Weslians’ gained some momentum in the closing minutes of the first half but were unable to capitalise on their chances as the match went to the breather on a barren stalemate.

The second stanza had Highlanders in charge in the opening minutes with skipper Philani Mkhonto testing the opposition goalkeeper Phila Mamba.

His effort forced a corner which he took quickly only for Mpendulo Tfomo to flick it on and narrowly miss the target.

The match had to be halted in the 55th minute after Wanderers’ Lindokuhle Dlamini had to be taken off after suffering an concussion injury. He needed CPR and was swiftly assisted by Emergency Services as well as team medics from both teams. Highlanders continued their onslaught of the opposition and finally broke the deadlock in the 66th minute through diminutive striker Musa Dlamini who finished off a Tony Machacha low cross .

The Black Bull could’ve made it two a minute later as this time Dlamini set up Machacha who narrowly missed.

Cometh the hour and cometh the man and it was the captain Philani who stepped up to put the game beyond doubt 10 minutes from time with a stunning 25 yards free kick, much to the delight of his team’s supporters.
