Africa-Press – Eswatini. His Majesty’s Correctional Services (HMCS) is championing technological transformation in Eswatini by developing innovations that promise to improve lives and expand access to services.

In response to His Majesty King Mswati III’s call for the nation to embrace the benefits of technology, HMCS is demonstrating how a government institution can pioneer meaningful change.

The department is exhibiting its latest innovations at the Eswatini International Trade Fair (EITF) 2025, currently underway at the Mavuso Trade and Exhibition Centre in Manzini.

Virtual Visits for Inmates

Among the showcased solutions is the live video visit system, designed to allow families to connect remotely with relatives serving in correctional facilities.

For now, the pilot project is being tested at Zakhele Remand Centre. Relatives can visit the HMCS pavilion at the Trade Fair to experience the innovation by connecting virtually with loved ones inside the centre. Officials say this system will ease the emotional and logistical burdens faced by families who would otherwise need to travel long distances to visit inmates.

Youth Innovation: The Robotic Bird

Another highlight is the robotic bird, an invention created by learners from Vulamasango High School through the Junior Achievement (JA) initiative. Designed as a home security tool, the robotic bird acts like a virtual guard, alerting homeowners to unusual activity while they are away.

By connecting the device to the internet, owners can receive real-time updates from the bird. This innovation not only showcases the potential of Eswatini’s youth but has also earned international recognition, securing third place at the JA Africa Cup in 2023.

A Hub of Innovation

HMCS has increasingly become an institution associated with forward-thinking solutions beyond its core correctional mandate. Staff at the EITF pavilion are available to explain and demonstrate how these and other products function, underscoring HMCS’s role in embracing modern tools to better serve communities.

By supporting such initiatives, HMCS highlights Eswatini’s growing commitment to digital transformation, youth innovation, and community-focused technology.
