Africa-Press – Eswatini. The Ministry of Public Works and Transport, has achieved a major milestone in the rehabilitation of Nkoseluhlaza Street after completing the installation of a bitumen-treated base along the entire road, paving the way for asphalt surfacing works aimed at improving mobility and road safety in Manzini’s central business district.

The works, which began earlier this year in Manzini form part of government’s broader infrastructure upgrade programme designed to modernise road networks, ease congestion, and support economic activity in Eswatini’s commercial hub. Construction has now progressed to Ngwane Street, with a key section between the Gorge Hotel and the Manzini Lifestyle Shopping Mall already treated, as the project steadily advances towards Bhunu Mall in the next phase, under a schedule that officials say remains on track.

The rehabilitation of Nkoseluhlaza Street is expected to significantly ease congestion in Manzini, where traffic volumes have increased steadily over the years due to rapid urbanisation and expanding commercial activity. The route serves as a critical link between major business centres, carrying thousands of vehicles daily, including public transport and delivery trucks.

The completion of the bitumen-treated base marks a critical stage in the construction process, providing a durable foundation designed to withstand heavy traffic loads and adverse weather conditions. Once asphalt surfacing is completed, motorists are expected to benefit from smoother driving conditions, reduced travel times, and lower vehicle maintenance costs.

Officials from the Ministry have emphasised that the project aligns with national priorities to strengthen infrastructure and stimulate economic growth. Improved road networks are essential for facilitating trade, enhancing access to services, and supporting small and medium enterprises that rely on efficient transport systems.

Businesses along the corridor have welcomed the progress, noting that improved road conditions will enhance accessibility and potentially increase customer traffic. The stretch connecting the Gorge Hotel, Manzini Lifestyle Shopping Mall, and Bhunu Mall remains a key economic zone, supporting retail, hospitality, and informal trading activities.

Despite temporary disruptions caused by construction, residents and commuters have expressed support for the project, recognising its long-term benefits. Traffic management measures have been implemented to minimise inconvenience and ensure the safety of both workers and road users.

The Ministry has reiterated its commitment to quality, with engineers closely monitoring all phases of the project to ensure compliance with national standards. Safety precautions, including signage and controlled work zones, remain in place throughout the construction period. Once completed, the upgraded Nkoseluhlaza Street and surrounding routes are expected to play a vital role in improving urban mobility, reducing congestion, and driving sustainable economic growth in Manzini.
