Africa-Press – Eswatini. This was the case for the nine swimmers and boxers who represented the country at the CANA Zone IV Championships in Zambia, and the AFBC Zone IV Elite Championships in Mozambique recently, as they were presented with a combined E75 000 in incentives by the Ministry of Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs.

The incentivising of athletes is contained in the Eswatini Sports and Recreation Council (ESRC) policy and allows for E8 000 for a gold medalist, E5 000 for silver and E3 000 for a bronze medal won at any international event.

Swimmer Hayley Hoy was the biggest winner on the day, as she banked a mout-watering E35 000 after winning three gold medals in the 50m Butterfly, 100m Butterfly and 200m Butterfly, one silver medal in the 200m IM and two bronze medals in the 800m freestyle and 3km Open Water Swim Challenge.

Another swimmer, Luca Fraser, pocketed E15 000 after winning three silver medals in the Breaststroke 50m, 100m and 200m events.

Minister Harries ‘Madze’ Bulunga congratulated the athletes, on behalf of government and assured his ministry’s commitment to athletes and the entire sporting fraternity through creating an enabling environment for sport as an industry to thrive in the country.

The biggest winner Hoy said, “I really enjoyed the competition and I was honoured to represent my country. However, I couldn’t have done it without my family support,” she said.
