Africa-Press – Eswatini. The Ministry of Public Works and Transport has commenced the construction of the Mkhondvo Bridge at Kakholwane in the Shiselweni region, bringing much needed infrastructure improvements to the area.

The construction team has completed 20% of the project, which is expected to be finalized by the end of July 2025.The bridge, previously a low-level crossing, was severely impacted by the heavy rains that struck the region earlier this year. As part of its broader infrastructure recovery plan, the Ministry has collaborated with key stakeholders to rehabilitate damaged structures and restore critical access routes for affected communities.

The Mkhondvo Bridge is a key connection for many rural areas in the region. It connects residents to important institutions and services, particularly educational facilities. Among the locations that depend on this bridge are Buseleni Area and schools including Ekuphumuleni, Sofaya,Buhleni,Baleni, Mandulo, Zamokuhle, and Tholulwazi Primary Schools, as well as Mkhondvo High School.

Once completed, the bridge will significantly enhance road safety, especially for students and teachers who previously had to cross risky, flooded paths to get to school. Improved access, school attendance is expected to increase, contributing to better educational outcomes for children in the area.

The bridge will also boots the local economy by facilitating the smooth transport of goods and services, it will enable farmers, small businesses, and service providers to operate more efficiently. Improved infrastructure is expected to boost trade and create economic opportunities, especially in remote communities.

The Mkhondvo Bridge is more than just a construction project, it is a symbol of resilience and progress.
