Africa-Press – Eswatini. MTN Premier League champions Green Mamba will leave the country tomorrow for Mozambique, where they will face off with Uniao Desportiva do Songo in the preliminary stage of the CAF Champions League.
The Correctional Services will play the first leg on Sunday, and a return leg will be played between August 25 and 27.
While the team will be boosted by the return of Mxolisi Mkhonto, they are also racing against time to have two of their players available for the CAF match.
Striker Sabelo ‘Skhali Ndzinisa and Njabulo ‘Magwegwe’ Magagula are doubtful for the match due to injuries.
Green Mamba head coach Ernest Mavuso said the absence of the two players would affect the team.
“These are some of our key players and we are keeping our fingers crossed that they recover on time.”
He said the medical team was assessing the situation and would give them feedback before the end of today.
Mavuso said Magagula had not been part of the team ever since he came back from the national team assignment.
“Sikhali’ stopped training with the team after we realised that he was showing signs of discomfort due to the injury. We do not want to aggravate the injury.”
Mavuso said preparations for the CAF assignment were going well.
“We are doing our best at training as we want to represent the country well. The friendly matches we played helped us a lot in getting the players ready for the Sunday match.”
He said they would be all out for a win.
“We will do our best with or without the key players. I trust all the players in the team, because each and everyone has his own role in the field of play. We will represent the country well,” he said.
Green Mamba Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mandla Sibiya said the team would leave the country tomorrow morning.
He said Mkhonto was expected back in the country today.
Mkhonto is said to have impressed during his assessment with Dstv Premiership side Royal AM.
The SA side will continue to monitor the player after he appeared in KZN Premier Cup early this month.
“Mkhonto will leave with the team for Mozambique. I will not say much regarding his move to Royal AM as nothing formal has been communicated to us.”
The player’s move was dented by the club’s ban by the FIFA from signing new players.
Mkhonto won the Player of the Season award after leading Green Mamba to the league title.
