MTN CEO MTSHALI BOWS OUT WITH FOND MEMORIES

Africa-Press – Eswatini. MTN Eswatini Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Wandile Mtshali says he leaves the telecommunications giant with nothing but fond memories after five years at the helm.

Speaking on Friday, October 3, 2025, during the MTN Breakfast meeting with the media at Mahlalekhukhwini House in Ezulwini, Mtshali reflected on his tenure, describing it as both fulfilling and emotional.

“I leave behind a company that is financially healthy, one that continues to meet its obligations, including paying dividends to the rightful organisations. The bonds among employees have also grown stronger over the years. Some colleagues have even expressed sadness at my departure, which makes it an emotional moment for me,” Mtshali said. Mtshali did not mention where he was going, but stated that members of the public would soon know of his destination when his time came.

MTN Eswatini Head of Corporate Services, Sibusiso Nhleko, highlighted some of Mtshali’s achievements, noting that LTE coverage in Eswatini had reached an impressive 95.8% under his leadership. LTE, or Long-Term Evolution, is a wireless broadband standard that delivers faster internet speeds, lower latency, and improved mobile network performance — laying the groundwork for future 5G deployment.

Nhleko commended Mtshali for steering the company through one of its most challenging periods, the COVID-19 pandemic, when demand for digital connectivity surged. “He joined at a very unlikely time, yet he ensured that MTN continued to operate and serve customers despite the global disruption,” Nhleko said.

The fight against cybercrime was another area where progress was made during Mtshali’s leadership. Nhleko admitted that cybercrime remained a significant threat but said partnerships with the police, banks, and the media had contributed to reducing incidents. “Scammers are always looking for vulnerabilities. Vigilance remains key,” he warned.

Beyond business, MTN has continued to invest in Corporate Social Investment (CSI) projects, particularly in digital skills education. Nhleko revealed that more than 4 000 people had expressed interest in MTN’s Skills Academy this year, a sharp rise from just 200 at the beginning of 2025.

As Mtshali prepares to exit at the end of the month, MTN Eswatini pays tribute to a leader who not only expanded the company’s technological footprint but also strengthened its role as a community partner.
