Africa-Press – Eswatini. MultiChoice-owned OTT service Showmax is investing in four original films and programming produced by East Africa. Initially the output will be shown in Kenya this year.
The new programming includes a feature film, a crime drama series, a high-level political thriller series set in a fictional county, and a thriller series. MultiChoice did not disclose the value of each show.
The investment seems to come as a direct response to Netflix announcing that it is investing Rand 900 million (€ 56.4,) in South African-produced material. That commitment covers four separate productions to be made and shot in South Africa in 2022 and 2023.
Timothy Okwaro, MultiChoice’s channel director for East and Southern Africa, said Kenyan’s investment in the original Showmax showed that the commitment “speaks to our localization strategy and the sharp focus on working with local producers, both established and coming soon to make sure we give our viewers what they want ”.
Showmax has approximately 861,000 subscribers across Africa. Netflix has about 2.6 million.
