Namibia Raises Gender Equality Voice with Women'S Peace Centre

Africa-Press – Eswatini. Namibia has reaffirmed its commitment to empowering women across SADC with the establishment of the International Women’s Peace Centre.

This institution is aimed at advancing women’s roles in peace, security and development according to the President of Namibia Dr. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah in her address at the 45th Ordinary SADC Summit here yesterday. She called on member states, including Eswatini, to support this initiative.

President Nandi-Ndaitwah underscored the vital role of women in shaping the region’s future, urging SADC to set a global example for gender equality.

The International Women’s Peace Centre, established by Namibia, is dedicated to championing UN Security Council Resolution 1325, adopted in October 2000 during Namibia’s presidency of the Security Council. The resolution recognises women’s critical role in peace processes and calls for their equal participation in conflict prevention, resolution, and post-conflict reconstruction. The Centre aims to promote peace, protect women’s rights in conflict and post-conflict settings, and advance women’s leadership across SADC and beyond.

“Namibia is deeply committed to the empowerment of women, and my presence here today stands as testimony to that commitment,” President Nandi-Ndaitwah said. “Women play a vital role in our societies, economies, and in shaping the future of our nations and region.”

The President appealed to SADC member states for collaboration, urging institutions to partner with the Centre to strengthen peace foundations and empower women as active agents of change. For Eswatini, this initiative offers an opportunity to enhance its own efforts to promote gender equality, particularly in rural communities where women drive agricultural and economic development.
