Africa-Press – Eswatini. On August 12, the world came together to celebrate International Youth Day, a day dedicated to recognising the power and potential of young people.
This global observance aims to raise awareness about the unique challenges faced by youth and promote their engagement in social, economic, and political spheres.
As part of celebrating this day, One Billion Rising Eswatini, Journey of Hope for Girls and Women Eswatini, Arterial network, ICW Eswatini and Bring Back MySmile Movement dedicated the day to empower the youth at Endishini Sports Ground under Ludzeludze Inkhundla.
The youth was engaged through sport. This was part of the ongoing community conversation targeting the youth that One Billion Rising is implementing at community level.
With a strong focus on Eswatini, we as One Billion Rising have been instrumental in addressing the challenges faced by young people in this region and nurturing their talents to create a brighter future, especially for girls and women. We pride ourselves for being in the forefront of youth empowerment.
International Youth Day was established to shed light on the issues faced by young people worldwide. In Eswatini, these challenges are even more pronounced, with limited access to quality education, healthcare, and economic opportunities. Additionally, gender inequality and cultural norms often hinder the progress of young girls, limiting their potential.
One Billion Rising recognises these unique challenges and has taken significant steps to address them.
Through various initiatives, the organiaation has been working tirelessly to provide educational opportunities, healthcare services, and vocational training to empower young people in Eswatini. By focusing on girls, One Billion Rising aims to break down barriers and create a more inclusive society.
The organisation firmly believes in the potential of young people and strives to nurture their talents.
Through mentorship programs, leadership training, and skills development workshops, One Billion Rising equips youth with the tools they need to succeed.
By empowering young people, the organization is fostering a generation of change-makers who will contribute to the growth and development of Eswatini.
One Billion Rising’s impact can be seen through the inspiring stories of young people who have been positively influenced by their work.
let us recognise the immense potential of young people, together, we can create a world where every young person, regardless of their background can have the opportunity to thrive and make a difference.
Gender-based violence is crime that leaves its victims traumatised physically, emotionally and psychologically. The youth was sensitised on the effects of GBV and how it violates one’s autonomy and a betrayal of trust that can last for years. During discussions, the youth explore how victims can protect themselves from perpetrators, empowered on how to avoid spreading hate to other young people living with HIV.

Education and awareness play a crucial role in preventing Gender Based Violence. By understanding the signs of potential danger and learning self-defense techniques, individuals can enhance their personal safety. Fostering a culture of consent and respect is vital in preventing GBV. It is also essential to communicate clearly and assertively with potential perpetrators.
If someone is making unwanted advances or ignoring boundaries, it is critical to speak up and let them know that their behavior is not acceptable. This can be challenging, but it is an important step in preventing sexual assault.
Additionally, it was discussed that parents have a critical responsibility to teach their young ones about how they can protect themselves from potential perpetrators. This includes teaching them to not being afraid to tell anybody that ‘Do Not Touch Me There, or I Will Report You!’
Support Groups: Strength in Unity:
Support groups provide a safe and understanding environment for survivors to share their experiences, find solace, and gain strength from others who have gone through similar ordeals.
One Billion Rising acknowledges that healing can be a long and difficult process, however, through resources and support survivors can move forward and rebuild their lives.
That is why One Billion Rising supports over 30 community circles that each have different individuals, who are battling with different life challenges. These groups offer a sense of community, validation, and encouragement. By connecting with others who have faced similar challenges and still share their experiences, survivors can break the isolation often experienced after rape and realise they are not alone. Also, being in that environment where everyone is friendly and easy to communicate to creates a warm sense of belonging that helps victims regain a purpose in life.
Addressing Stigma and Shame:
One of the most significant barriers faced by rape survivors is the stigma and shame associated with sexual assault. Society often blames the victim, perpetuating harmful myths and misconceptions. Unfortunately, this then makes it challenging for rape survivors to come forward and seek the help they need. It is crucial to challenge these attitudes and create a culture of empathy and understanding.
This can be done by educating ourselves and others about the realities of rape, challenging harmful stereotypes and providing resources and support that can help in combating victim-blaming and promote a much supportive and understanding environment.
PS: Journey of Hope/One Billion Rising strongly condemns rape of either genders. That is why during community outreach services, males are also being included to lectures because nobody deserves to be left out in gaining knowledge about how they can be better citizens.
