‘PENALISE EEC FOR VIOLATING COUNTRY’S LAWS’

Africa-Press – Eswatini. Lobamba Lomdzala Member of Parliament, Marwick Khumalo, has called upon government to penalise the Eswatini Electricity Company (EEC) for operating against the provisions of the country’s laws.

Khumalo made these remarks during the ministry of natural resources and energy first quarter performance report debate in Parliament yesterday.

The legislator said allowing the EEC to conduct business directly with South African companies was in violation of the country’s laws.

“Why is EEC being allowed to deal directly and exclusively with South African companies when it comes to tenders and contracts or any other business? According to provisions of our laws, they should actually be penalised for doing that.

ESSPRA should not be allowing this to happen because it is against the provisions of the country’s legislation,” Khumalo said.

He made reference to the fact that most of the EEC tenders or contracts always fell into the hands of South African companies.

He challenged government to ensure that EEC changed their way of doing business to be in line with the provisions of the Procurement Act.

Empowering

“The big EEC tenders or contracts are hardly given to local companies as preference is always on South African companies yet the Procurement Act speaks about empowering local companies when it comes to such businesses.

We really need to re-look into the provisions of the law when it comes to EEC business dealings,” Khumalo said.

Acting Minister of Natural Resources and Energy, Jabulani Mabuza, however stated that to his knowledge, EEC contracts were also being extended to local companies but acknowledged Khumalo’s concern, which he promised to discuss with the EEC management.
