Africa-Press – Eswatini. Prime Minister Russell Mmiso Dlamini will represent His Majesty King Mswati III and the Eswatini nation at the inauguration of President-elect Peter Mutharika, a significant diplomatic gesture reinforcing ties between the two countries.
Dlamini departed Eswatini on Friday, 3 October 2025 via King Mswati III International Airport for Blantyre, where the swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, 4 October 2025, at Kamuzu Stadium.
Context of the Malawi Election
The 2025 Malawi General Election, held on 16 September, was closely watched across the region for its political significance. President Peter Mutharika, representing the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), was declared the winner with 56.8 % of votes, defeating incumbent President Lazarus Chakwera of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), who garnered 33 %.
Chakwera conceded defeat prior to the official announcement, citing Mutharika’s insurmountable lead and pledging to ensure a peaceful transfer of power. The inauguration will elevate Mutharika as Malawi’s seventh president.
Political analysts noted that the election was framed as a referendum on economic governance, with Malawi confronting inflation, foreign exchange shortfalls, and cost-of-living pressures under the outgoing administration.
Mutharika, 85, previously served as Malawi’s head of state from 2014 until 2020. During that earlier term, he oversaw infrastructure initiatives and worked to stabilise macroeconomic indicators, though he also faced criticism over allegations of cronyism. His running mate and vice president-elect is Jane Ansah, a prominent figure in Malawi’s judiciary and former chairperson of its Electoral Commission.
Significance of Eswatini’s Representation
Prime Minister Dlamini’s attendance signals the importance of maintaining strong diplomatic relations with Malawi. It offers an opportunity for bilateral engagement, reinforcing Eswatini’s support for constitutional democracy and regional unity.
State media and diplomatic sources indicate that Dlamini will attend alongside other African leaders, and may use the occasion to discuss regional cooperation, trade, and mutual development priorities.
As Malawi transitions to a new leadership era, Eswatini’s presence reflects respect, continuity, and a hope for renewed cooperation between the two nations in the years ahead.
