Africa-Press – Eswatini. The Eswatini Police Service has urged the public to hand in unlicensed firearms this September as part of Africa Amnesty Month, promising no arrests or legal repercussions for those who comply.
Speaking on September 1, 2025 at the official launch of Africa Amnesty Month at Police Headquarters in Mbabane, National Commissioner of Police (NATCOM) Vusi Manoma Masango emphasised that this initiative offers individuals a final opportunity to surrender illegal guns quietly and safely.
A Clean Slate for Those Who Comply
NATCOM Masango reassured the public that anyone who hands in an unlicensed firearm during the amnesty period will walk away free, with no legal consequences. “No arrests, no drama, just a clean slate,” he stated, highlighting the police’s commitment to reducing gun-related crime while giving law-abiding citizens a chance to correct past mistakes.
Tackling Violent Crime
The Commissioner warned that failure to surrender unlicensed firearms would carry severe consequences once offenders are caught. He stressed that illegal guns remain a major contributor to violent crimes and murders across the country. “Illegal firearms are the root of many murders and violent crimes in Eswatini,” he said, urging communities to cooperate with authorities.
Public Cooperation Key to Safety
Africa Amnesty Month provides a crucial window for the police to make communities safer by reducing the number of firearms in circulation. NATCOM Masango called on all residents to take advantage of this opportunity, emphasising that voluntary compliance not only avoids criminal liability but also helps protect families and neighbours from the dangers of gun violence.
The police have confirmed that the surrender process is straightforward, confidential, and free of legal entanglements for those participating.
Final Warning
The Eswatini Police Service reiterated that after the amnesty period, strict enforcement will resume, and individuals found in possession of unlicensed firearms will face full legal action.
