Africa-Press – Eswatini. Minister of Commerce, Industry and Trade Manqoba Khumalo has underscored the importance of standards and quality compliance in unlocking export opportunities for local businesses, as Eswatini continues to strengthen its industrial and environmental capacity.

Speaking at the Eswatini Standards Seminar held at Royal Villas in Ezulwini on Friday, 17 April 2025, the minister described the occasion as a significant step towards enhancing the country’s competitiveness in global markets.

He expressed appreciation to Union Papers for the invitation and commended the company for its contribution to industrial development and environmental sustainability.

Industrial Growth Anchored on Innovation and Sustainability

The minister highlighted the growth of Union Papers, established in 2019, noting that it has rapidly positioned itself as a key player in Eswatini’s industrial sector. Its official opening in 2024 by King Mswati III was described as a reflection of the company’s strategic importance.

Union Papers currently processes approximately 120 tonnes of wastepaper daily, producing about 100 tonnes of Kraft paper used in box manufacturing. The operation boasts a recovery rate of 87 per cent, demonstrating strong efficiency and operational excellence.

In addition to paper recycling, the company processes plastic waste and operates an incineration plant with a capacity of 500 kilograms per hour, positioning itself at the forefront of modern waste management solutions.

Circular Economy and Environmental Leadership

Khumalo emphasised that such initiatives represent the practical implementation of a circular economy, where waste is transformed into valuable resources. He further praised the company’s shift from coal-fired boilers to 100 per cent biomass energy, noting that the complete elimination of coal from operations sets a benchmark for green industrial transformation.

This transition, he said, demonstrates that sustainability and profitability can coexist, while also supporting Eswatini’s environmental protection goals and global climate commitments.

Omega Waste Management Strengthens Public Health

The launch of the Omega Waste Management division was highlighted as a critical development in the country’s waste management system.

The facility introduces specialised capabilities for handling biomedical and infectious waste, as well as expired pharmaceuticals and hazardous materials. The minister noted that this will strengthen occupational health and safety standards, protect the environment, and support the healthcare system.

Job Creation and Economic Impact

Khumalo also acknowledged the company’s contribution to employment, with nearly 300 emaSwati currently employed. He said this reflects meaningful progress in job creation, skills development, and industrial workforce growth.

He added that such investments align with national priorities, including sustainable development, improved waste management, and climate resilience.

Call for Private Sector Participation

Looking ahead, the minister welcomed the company’s plans to expand into biomass fuel production and increase the adoption of solar energy, while continuing to reduce carbon emissions. He reaffirmed government’s commitment to supporting sustainable industry and creating an enabling environment for responsible private sector growth.

At the same time, he called on other businesses to embrace innovation, invest in sustainability, and align their operations with national development goals.

Facility Declared Officially Open

Khumalo described the new facility as a symbol of progress and responsible industrial development in Eswatini. On behalf of government, he congratulated Union Papers on the milestone and officially declared the incineration plant, under the Omega Waste Management division, open.
