SIBAYA CALLS FOR QUALIFIED SPORTS MINISTER

Africa-Press – Eswatini. The People’s Parliament, Sibaya, has suggested that the minister of Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs should have certain qualifications and skills.

This was one of the submissions made on Tuesday during the second day of Sibaya. One speaker suggested that individuals to be considered for this position should have knowledge in sports psychology. Wandile Gamedze from Zikhotheni said that such a minister would be able to take care of the welfare of all athletes in sports such as soccer, volleyball, netball and tennis. “Sports psychology is a field that uses psychological knowledge and skills to address optimal performance and well-being of athletes, developmental and social aspects of sports participation, and systemic issues associated with sports settings and organisations. “I suggest that a minister who has studied Sports Psychology would be able to assist coaches and athletes in achieving their goals and overcoming their challenges,” Gamedze said.

well-versed

He added that the minister would be well-versed in the players’ welfare at home and their diet, and would pioneer the grooming of the athletes in sports as an expert. One individual who boast of such level of education is Clinical Psychologist Ndo Mdlalose. Notably, is that His Majesty King Mswati III had on Monday, when officially opening the People’s Parliament requested that the nation to also advice on the appointment of the cabinet, including the prime minister. Gamedze was echoing the words of one of the Sibaya Panellists and Nkwene Member of Parliament (MP) Sikhumbuzo Dlamini, who had said that there were numerous job opportunities in the sports sector.

However, grabbing these opportunities in the sector only lied with the Sports Bill (2020). Once passed into a law, it would professionalise sports; make it financially rewarding for athletes; and create more job opportunities. According to American Psychological Association (APA), sport psychology is a proficiency that uses psychological knowledge and skills to address optimal performance and well-being of athletes. It also touches on developmental and social aspects of sports participation, and systemic issues associated with sports settings and organisations.
