Africa-Press – Eswatini. The national team, Sihlangu captain Lindo Mkhonta’s red card which he earned during the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) against Senegal has come back to haunt him.

Mkhonta has been ruled out of the 2022 AFCON preliminary qualifiers where Sihlangu play Somalia tomorrow at a neutral venue in Tanzania. Mkhonta is set to join the squad for the second leg match billed for Mbombela Stadium South Africa. Mkhonta is not part of the 22 players that were announced by coach Dominic Kunene for the first leg clash. Sihlangu left the country without their captain on Sunday. Eswatini Football Association (EFA) Communications and Marketing Officer, Muzi Radebe, confirmed the suspension of Mkhonta yesterday.

Suspension

“The Sihlangu captain, Lindo Mkhonta is out of the first leg encounter against Somalia due to a suspension following his red card against Senegal in a match played in Dakar during the TotalEnergies 2021 AFCON Qualifiers, whose finals were implemented in Cameroon in January 2022,” reads part of the statement from EFA. Radebe said according to a CAF correspondence, the national team skipper will be suspended for one match only. “Due to this suspension Mkhonta was not part of the travelling delegation to Tanzania for the away match against Somalia but he is expected to be available for selection for the second leg match to be played on March 27, 2022,” he added.
