Africa-Press – Eswatini. Embiveni Meat Industries (EMI) celebrated its 60th anniversary in Matsapha, bringing together employees, management and business leaders to honour the company’s journey of excellence and resilience.
The event was attended by Inyatsi Group Chairman Michelo Shakantu, members of the Group Executive Committee and loyal staff who have played a big role in building the company’s success.
Shakantu praised Embiveni’s strong foundation and assured guests that the company is well-positioned to continue thriving for the next 60 years. He also thanked the government for its efforts in managing Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD), reminding all present that while challenges may slow progress, they cannot stop the company’s work and determination to serve the nation.
FMD has recently posed a serious challenge to the livestock and meat industry in Eswatini. The outbreak was first confirmed in May 2025 in the Shiselweni region, where cattle at the Sikhwebezi Dip Tank tested positive. More than 20 animals showed symptoms and at least five cases were confirmed by laboratory testing. As a result, government declared livestock movement restrictions in Hluthi, Lavumisa and parts of Nhlangano to stop the spread.
Eswatini also lost its “FMD-free without vaccination” status, which led to export bans from key markets such as the European Union, United Kingdom, Norway, Taiwan and neighbouring countries. This has affected the local meat industry and reduced foreign earnings. To respond, government allocated E40 million towards containment, rolled out vaccination campaigns in high-risk areas and set up checkpoints to monitor animal movement.
Employees were also celebrated during the milestone event. Long-serving staff member Derrick Shongwe shared his inspiring journey, saying he started as a cleaner and never imagined he would grow with the company in such a meaningful way. “I began wanting to be an operator. One day, when someone was absent, I was asked to fill in. My supervisor was impressed and encouraged me to continue. That was the turning point of my career,” he said.
Embiveni, which was established in 1965, has grown into one of Eswatini’s leading meat suppliers, known for its commitment to quality, food safety and customer satisfaction. The 60-year celebration reflected not only the company’s history but also its dedication to the future.
