Africa-Press – Eswatini. The past week saw the world coming together and commemorating refugees’ day.
This is a day that is very important to the work of Baphalali Red Cross Eswatini as a humanitarian organization. Refugees are people who have been forced to flee their homes and have crossed an international border to find safety in another country.
These are people who have fled war, violence, conflict or persecution and have crossed an international border to find safety in another country.
They often have had to flee with little more than the clothes on their back, leaving behind homes, possessions, jobs and loved ones. We should all know that they are defined and protected in international law and must not be expelled or returned to situations where their life and freedom are at risk.
We are part of the largest humanitarian movement in the world, the International Red Cross Red Crescent Movement. As part of this movement, we also work with people displaced by conflict, persecution and violence all over the world.
Everyone Has A Right To Seek Safety
Refugees are defined and protected in international law and are present all over the world including Eswatini. Imagine being forced to flee your country in order to escape to safety. If you were lucky you had time to pack a bag. If not, you simply dropped everything and ran.
That should show you that life as a refugee can be difficult to imagine. But, for millions of people around the world, it is a terrifying reality. These are our fellow brothers and sisters and sadly this is a life they live and very much of a reality to them.
The least that we can all do is at least make life bearable to them a nd offer support and assistance where possible.
As part of humanity, refugees have the right to be protected in every country. The protection of refugees has many aspects. These include safety from being returned to danger, access to fair and efficient asylum procedures, and measures to ensure that their basic human rights are respected while they secure a longer-term solution.
Organisations such as Baphalali and other intrrnational ones works around the clock to accomplish all of this, but we sadly cannot do it alone. We need all the support we can get in order to ensure that we paly this role well to all refugees in the country.
Imagine the isolation, the loneliness, the small triumphs and tearing defeats of trying to find one’s way in a new world. Such stories are the staples of newspaper and TV news features of refugees around the world. More often in others hope is lost and life is difficult and full of pain. It is for this reason that Baphalali implores everyone to have a caring and human attitude to all refugees. Always remember that Humanity comes first.
Our role is to support people in the places they flee from, the places they pass through, and the places they arrive. We support without judgement or conditions, and our priority is to be there for those who need us most, no matter where they come from.
