Africa-Press – Eswatini. Artist Thobile Makhoyane is seeking donations worth E30 000 for her to perform in Portugal at a festival dubbed ‘Lisbon Poetry Festival’.

Makhoyane said the money would be used for her travelling expenses.

“Ever since COVID-19 halted the entertainment sector, most festivals do not cover your travelling expenses. In my case they will take care of my accommodation but I need to cater for my flights. I also had a challenge with my documents which I hope will be resolved soon.

This gig is important to me as I also got a slot as Makhoyane. I am pleading for assistance as I would love to represent Eswatini. The project ‘Cartas de Amor para Meninas May Importadas’ which I star in was selected for a Poetry Festival in Lisbon,” she said.

She said the invite was not the first as she had been invited more than three times to Europe but could not make it because of finances.

“Travelling expenses have always been a challenge, which is why I am seeking for assistance. I would love to put Eswatini on the map through art. Those who are willing to support my craft can contact me on7696 5664. Their assistance would really mean a lot to me and I do not want to miss this opportunity,” she said.

She is expected to leave on September 12 and will be performing on September 16 and 18.

“I will be hoisting the country’s flag; they should expect the best art from Eswatini, a powerful set full of emotions that tell a story. With the support of the nation and other companies my dream could come true,” she said.

Makhoyane will be performing with the likes of Carol Matosse, Márcia Pascoal and Yuck Miranda.

“We presented the first show in April and luckily the director of the upcoming show was interested. He requested us to apply and we got the slot.

“I am super excited about the show as I will be rubbing shoulders with talented artists.

I was later informed that they would like to see the project,’Cartas de Amor para Meninas May Importadas’ which I star in,” she added. Since 2016, and with institutional support from Camões IP, the Lisbon Poetry Festival fulfills its goal of encouraging reading, promoting the democratisation of the word and valuing poetry written in Portuguese.
