Africa-Press – Eswatini. Farmers in the country have been warned to vaccinate their livestock against black quarter and lumpy skin.

According to the Lubombo Early Warning bulletin livestock farmers are encouraged to destock none productive animals to generate revenues and reduce feed budget which generally increases during the dry season.

Farmers were further urged to improve nutrition of available feed through provision of protein and mineral blocks to ensure that their animals do not deteriorate in body condition. Farmers according to the bulletin should vaccinate their animals against black quarter and lumpy skin and adhere to the annual livestock vaccination programme.

They were advised to also monitor the health of their animals to make swift and relevant actions in case health risks and diseases are identified

The bulletin stated that this month one can expect warm temperatures, normal to above normal rains in the Lubombo plateau and the Lowveld.

“Farmers should look out for wild fires and make sure to vaccinate their livestock against black quarter and lumpy skin. Those who have planted beans (a winter crop) under irrigation are encouraged to practise good management like weeding,” the bulletin reads.

It further encouraged farmers to dig holes in preparation of planting fruit trees.

Dry beans farmers were advised to scout for pests and diseases and side-dress at onset of bud-formation while vegetable farmers were advised to plant all vegetables by using summer varieties.

“Fruit tree farmers are encouraged that fruit tree planting can commence. Vegetable and fruit farmers are encouraged to weed around the gardens and in orchards. As mango fruit trees are flowering, famers are encouraged to water their trees and add 5:1:5 fertilisers,” the bulletin read.
