Africa-Press – Eswatini. Prime Minister Russell Mmiso Dlamini has issued a strong and hopeful call for unity, urging Emaswati to work hand-in-hand with Government to decisively defeat the Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) outbreak affecting the country’s livestock sector.
Speaking during an oversight visit to the ongoing cattle vaccination programme at Mzimnene dip tank, the PM stressed that success in eradicating the disease depends on collective national discipline and cooperation.
“Government is doing everything within its power to eradicate this disease. We are confident that, with the Foot and Mouth Disease control measures in place, including the disinfection of vehicles and passengers, as well as the ongoing vaccination drive, we will conquer the disease,” said Dlamini.
Dressed in protective gear alongside veterinary teams and officials, the Premier witnessed firsthand the coordinated efforts underway to safeguard the country’s livestock.
Encouragingly, Government has already made significant progress, with 40% of the national herd having received its second dose.
“If this disease persists, it will be largely due to our own actions. Reckless movement of livestock undermines the progress we are making. Without full cooperation between the public and Government, the disease will continue to spread,” he warned.
Despite the challenges, Dlamini expressed optimism that the country is on track to fully vaccinate all livestock in the coming months.
“As Emaswati, we all recognise that cattle are the wealth of the nation. When we are unable to generate income from them, poverty increases. Many Emaswati are employed through the beef industry, but due to FMD, we are currently unable to export to international markets,” he added.
Background
Foot and Mouth Disease is a highly contagious viral infection that affects cloven-hoofed animals, particularly cattle. While it does not pose a direct threat to human health, its economic consequences are severe, often leading to trade restrictions and loss of income for farmers.
In Eswatini, cattle play a critical role in both the cultural and economic fabric of society. Government has intensified its response through a nationwide vaccination programme, movement restrictions, and heightened biosecurity measures.
The PM’s visit to Mzimnene reflects strong leadership and commitment to protecting livelihoods and restoring the livestock sector.
