Information Minister Ceesay Criticizes KMC, Labels it Among Africa’S Dirtiest

Africa-Press – Gambia. Gambia’s Minister of Information, Dr. Ismaila Ceesay, has leveled scathing criticism at the Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC), describing it as one of the dirtiest municipalities on the African continent.

In an interview with West Coast Radio’s Coffee Time with Peter Gomez, Dr. Ceesay lamented the state of cleanliness in the municipality, citing repeated complaints from residents and market vendors.

“KMC is one of the most dirty municipalities in the continent,” Dr. Ceesay said. “Most of the countries I have visited, I have visited in the continent, in Africa. KM is one of the dirtiest.”

The minister claimed he has received numerous complaints about the conditions in local markets, describing them as unhygienic and unfit for human use.

“I have found KM to be the dirtiest, and that is a fact. Just walk across the street from Senegambia towards Turntable, you’ll see dirt, even though it is in the West Coast region. But go to Bundung, go to Ebo Town, go to the markets.

“I’ve got calls from markets, Talinding Market, Latrikunda Market. Their toilets are not even fit for human usage. They will call me to complain. Can you talk about our markets? It’s the deplorable condition that Talib has abandoned and ignored our markets.” Ceesay said.

He blamed Mayor Talib Bensouda for prioritizing politics over public service, stating: “And that is the price you pay when you focus too much on politics and ignore the reason why you are elected.”

Dr. Ceesay also emphasizes that public officials, once entrusted with the delivery of services, must either fulfill their mandate or honestly admit they cannot. He further criticizes the KM mayor for being overly consumed with politics, saying this has led him to spread falsehoods and mislead the public: “I think the young man is focusing too much on politics. That is why he is going around making false statements and trying to mislead the public, which we think is not good politics,” he asserted.

During the discussion, the host pointed out that Mayor Talib Bensouda has made significant improvements in waste management in KM, noting that the municipality is now cleaner than it was when he took office.

However, the Minister disagreed with that assessment. “I don’t agree with that. I live in KM. I still have issues with waste. I go to KM every day, but I don’t think so. I think what I know is that the few people that, some of his friends and family, are benefiting from the Mbalit project, but not the general populace. So obviously, that is the fact,” he stated.
