Africa-Press – Gambia. Hamat N.K. Bah, Gambia’s Minister of Local Government, Lands, and Religious Affairs, asserted this week that President Adama Barrow’s rise to power in 2017 was no accident but rather a divinely ordained event that has ushered in significant national development.
Speaking at a political meeting, Mr. Bah emphasized that President Barrow’s election following the defeat of the long-ruling APRC party was “designed by Almighty Allah” and has since brought “unprecedented development” to the country.
“As I always said, it is not by accident that he became the President in 2017,” Mr. Bah said. “When we voted out the APRC. It is not by accident; I think it was designed by almighty Allah that a man like Adam Barrow will be the President of this country, and we are all enjoying that, and we are all seeing the unprecedented development in this country. Whether you like this government or you hate it, the fact of the matter is that development is happening. Well again, Gambians must take advantage of that, particularly the youths; they need to take a learned profession and get skills to get involved,” he said.
Mr. Bah noted the influx of young workers from neighboring countries into The Gambia, contrasting it with persistent complaints among Gambian youth about unemployment. He urged young people to take advantage of training programs offered at vocational skills centers.
Highlighting improvements in wages, Mr. Bah said that daily earnings for skilled laborers, such as masons, now average about 700 dalasis, while even unskilled laborers can earn approximately 300 dalasis per day.
“Today if you look at the average wage, the daily wage, even for a Mason, you’re talking about D700 a day. For a mere laborer, it takes about D300 a day. That’s almost D9,000 a month. That’s a lot of money. I think we need to do that to encourage everybody. This government is ready to support at every level to advance the development of the Gambia,” he said.
Mr. Bah also described the meeting as “very fruitful,” citing open dialogue and the formulation of strategies aimed at consolidating political gains ahead of the 2026 elections.
“You know that our politics in this country have gone through an evolutionary process; it has become more dynamic and responsive,” Mr. Bah said. “Measures are therefore needed to address some of the emerging issues as we cruise along towards 2026. And I think today’s meeting has set the pace and the agenda towards achieving the ultimate goal of getting the victory come December 2026.”
He further praised President Barrow for what he described as exceptional leadership qualities, crediting him with reshaping The Gambia’s political landscape. Stating, “He has become very unique in the Gambian political landscape.”
