2025 AFCON: Nigeria, Egypt Advance to Quarter-Finals

Africa-Press – Ghana. Nigeria and Egypt booked their places in the quarter-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), with Nigeria cruising past Mozambique 4-0 and Egypt needing extra time to defeat Benin 3-1.

Nigeria produced a dominant display at the Complexe Sportif de Fés, brushing aside Mozambique with goals from Ademola Lookman, Akor Adams and a brace from Victor Osimhen.

The Super Eagles signalled their intent early when Osimhen had a goal ruled out for offside inside two minutes.

Iwobi slipped a pass through to Adams, who squared for Lookman to tap home from close range. Nigeria doubled their lead five minutes later when Lookman’s cross deflected off Adams and fell kindly for Osimhen, who finished at the back post.

Mozambique struggled to cope with Nigeria’s pace and movement and offered little threat before the break, as Nigeria went into halftime with a comfortable 2-0 lead.

Two minutes after the restart, Lookman beat two defenders down the left and crossed for Osimhen to score his second of the night and Nigeria’s third. Adams later completed the rout to seal a convincing win for Nigeria.

In the earlier match, Egypt were pushed to extra time by a resilient Benin side before eventually securing a 3-1 victory.

Chances were limited in a cautious first half, though Egypt came close through Omar Marmoush and Rami Rabia.

The deadlock was broken in the 69th minute when Marwan Attia struck a powerful shot into the top corner after good work on the right by Mohamed Salah and Mohamed Hany.

Benin equalised late on when Dossou reacted quickest after El Shenawy failed to fully clear a deflected cross, forcing the match into extra time at 1-1.

Egypt regained the lead seven minutes into extra time when Yasser Ibrahim headed home from an Attia cross.

Benin pushed forward in search of another equaliser, but Mohammed Salah sealed the win in stoppage time, scoring on the counter-attack after Benin committed players forward from a corner.

The result sent Egypt into the quarter-finals, where they would join Nigeria in the last eight.
