Africa-Press – Ghana. The Jasikan Municipal Assembly in the Oti Region will on Friday, December 5, honour 11 distinguished farmers as part of activities marking the 41st National Farmers’ Day celebration.
The municipal event, scheduled to take place at Buem-Odumase, a predominantly farming community, forms part of efforts to acknowledge individuals and institutions whose contributions continue to drive agricultural development within the municipality.
Mr Moses Anekah, Jasikan Municipal Director of the Department of Food and Agriculture (DoFA), told in an interview that preparations were far advanced for a colourful and inclusive celebration.
He said the award scheme had been designed to recognise excellence across several sectors of agriculture, reflecting the district’s diverse farming potential.
The award categories include the Overall Best Municipal Farmer, Municipal Best Youth Farmer, Municipal Best Livestock Farmer, Municipal Best Female Farmer and Best Processor.
Others are the Municipal Best Differently-Abled Farmer, Best Senior High School in Practical Agriculture, Best Junior High School in Practical Agriculture, and Best Primary School in Practical Agriculture.
Mr Anekah said the celebration would also honour the Best Faith-Based Organisation (FBO) in practical agriculture, as well as the Best Agricultural Extension Agent (AEA).
He noted that the awards would highlight not only the contributions of individual farmers but also the efforts of educational and religious institutions nurturing a new generation of agriculturally skilled youth.
The Municipal Director disclosed that Mr Kofi Iddie Adams, Member of Parliament (MP) for Buem Constituency and Minister of Sports and Recreation, together with Mr Parke-Davis Magyigbe, Jasikan Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), would be the Special Guests for the ceremony.
Chiefs and people from Kute, Old and New Ayoma, Baglo, Oseikrom, Dzolu and surrounding communities are expected to grace the occasion, which is anticipated to draw a large gathering of farmers, community leaders and stakeholders in the agricultural sector.
Mr Anekah commended farmers for their resilience despite challenges such as climate variability, rising input costs and post-harvest losses.
He encouraged them to continue adopting improved farming practices to enhance productivity and ensure food security.
He said award winners would receive certificates, agricultural tools, farm inputs and other incentives to support their work, stressing that the Department of Agriculture remained committed to strengthening agriculture as the backbone of the district’s economy.
