Africa-Press – Ghana. A new political movement, The Base Movement (TBM), has been officially launched in Accra with a call on the youth to take an active role in transforming Ghana’s future through innovation, discipline, and productive enterprise.
The launch, held at Tesano, followed a float from Kwame Nkrumah Circle along some principal streets to the Movement’s newly unveiled headquarters on Monday.
The event drew supporters, youth groups, aggrieved members of the two leading political parties – National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and sympathisers from across the country.
Speaking at the launch, Dr. George Oti Bonsu, Founder of TBM, said Ghana needs a practical and visionary leadership, stressing that the country’s progress depended on leaders with the ability to create jobs and empower citizens.
He advocated for a business-oriented approach to governance, noting that individuals with proven capacity to generate employment opportunities were best suited for national leadership.
“In my view, if there is someone to vote for, I would prefer a businessman, whether it is Ibrahim Mahama or Kennedy Agyapong, individuals who understand how to create jobs,” he said.
“When the youth are employed and empowered, they are less likely to fall into hardship or crime driven by hunger.”
He also stated that the Movement’s flagbearer for the 2028 election would be someone who prioritises agriculture as a central pillar of national development.
He lamented the negative perception surrounding farming in Ghana, contrasting it with practices in other countries where highly educated individuals actively engage in agriculture.
He explained that agriculture and tourism could serve as twin pillars for development across Ghana and the African continent, urging a national shift in mindset to accord farming the respect it deserves.
“You saw that two tractors led you during the float. There is a deep meaning behind that. It symbolises an elderly man whose knowledge and intelligence we must not allow to fade away before we truly appreciate it.
“He has told us that if given the opportunity to lead, he could take care of the whole of Africa with just two pillars: farming and tourism,” he said.
Dr. Bonsu appealed to young people to rally behind the Movement, describing them as the country’s hope and future.
“The Base exists for the youth. We are not here to fight, we are here to build, to unite, and to change this country for the better,” he said.
Dr. George Oti Bonsu, Founder of The Base Movement, addressing supportersApostle Paul Agyekum, a leading member of the Movement, dismissed claims that the group was formed to solicit funds from established political parties such as the NDC and the NPP, insisting that its true existence was to rescue Ghanaians from the misgovernance of the two parties.
“Our level of investment, sacrifice, and support, even from abroad, far exceeds anything these parties could offer,” he said, stressing that the Movement was driven by patriotism rather than financial gain.
He affirmed the Movement’s intention to contest the 2028 general election, assuring supporters that it would present a credible and capable presidential candidate.
“We are committed to presenting the best candidate, one who will prove beyond doubt that he is capable of leading this nation,” he added.
Delivering a message on behalf of the youth, Lawrence Amenuvo described the current state of the country as a crossroads, where potential remained untapped due to challenges such as lack of direction, discipline, and integrity.
“The question is not whether Ghana can rise. The question is, will we, the youth, rise to make it happen?” he asked.
He emphasised the need for an education system that promotes creativity and problem-solving rather than rote learning, noting that many young people remained unemployed despite formal education.
“We must move from memorisation to creativity, from dependency to reliance,” he said.
Mr. Amenuvo also highlighted corruption as a major obstacle to national development, pledging that the Movement would prioritise accountability and job creation.
He urged unity and self-belief among the youth to ensure that the goals of the party were achieved.
