Current IMF Bailout must be the Last for Ghana – President Mahama

Africa-Press – Ghana. President John Dramani Mahama has stated that Ghana’s current 17th International Monetary Fund (IMF) bailout must be the last for the country.

He said the Government was taking steps to strengthen domestic revenue mobilization, restore fiscal discipline, rebuild confidence in the financial sector, and support indigenous enterprises to grow.

“Economic resilience is not achieved through austerity alone, but through production, inclusion, and shared prosperity,” President Mahama said in his opening remarks at the 77th Annual New Year School and Conference at the University of Ghana, Accra.

The four-day programme, organized by the School of Continuing and Distance Education under the College of Education of the University of Ghana, is on the theme: “Building the Ghana We Want, Together for Sustainable Development.”

President Mahama noted that the extended credit facility programme with the IMF had been very successful.

“We will emerge from the extended credit facility with the IMF towards the middle of this year. And it is my hope that this will be the very last time we will ever go for a bailout from that international monetary institution. It must be the 17th and the last time that Ghana goes for a bailout from the IMF,” he said.

He added that Ghana could continue its collaboration with the IMF under Article 4 and other instruments, but stressed: “It will definitely be the last time we go on our knees to beg for a bailout.”

Touching on human capital development as the engine of growth, President Mahama said no nation had ever developed beyond the quality of its people.

He emphasized that education, skills, health, and innovation were the foundations of sustainable growth and urged Ghanaians to improve learning outcomes at all levels, especially at the basic level, to equip children with critical skills for higher education.

Madam Marietta Agyeiwaa Brew, Chairperson of the University Council, said the Annual New Year School and Conference had established itself as a platform for critical discourse on all facets of national life.

She noted that by harnessing the expertise of diverse professionals, the School had consistently evolved, driving a research and development agenda that extended beyond the University into the heart of the nation.
