Election of Bekwai Presiding Member Ends in Stalemate

Africa-Press – Ghana. The election of a Presiding Member for the Bekwai Municipal Assembly ended in a stalemate after two rounds of voting failed to produce a candidate with the constitutionally required two-thirds majority.

The exercise formed part of the statutory process to elect a Presiding Member to chair Assembly sittings, maintain order during deliberations, and support effective decision-making over a two-year term.

Three Assembly Members including Daniel Kwajo Anokye, Bruce Kofi Asante, and Adansi Piesie contested for the position.

Each of them presented their vision for unity, transparency, and improved coordination of the Assembly’s legislative and oversight functions before voting commenced.

At the end of the first round, Mr. Bruce Kofi Asante secured 24 votes; Mr. Daniel Kwajo Anokye obtained 19, while Mr. Adansi Piesie polled seven votes.

With no candidate reaching the required two-thirds majority, the process progressed to a second ballot in line with electoral procedures.

The second round narrowed the contest to the two leading candidates.

Mr. Anokye increased his tally to 25 votes, while Mr. Asante secured 24 votes.

Despite the results which were very close, neither candidate attained the constitutional threshold to be declared Presiding Member.

Following consultations and in adherence to due process, the Assembly adjourned the election and scheduled a third round of voting within the next ten days.

The upcoming round is expected to offer members another opportunity to build consensus and elect a Presiding Member to lead the Assembly’s affairs for the next two years.
