Africa-Press – Ghana. John Mahama, has assured all sports federations of equitable attention if he is given a second chance as President.

Addressing the media, the former president of Ghana emphasised the need to support sports beyond football, which has often overshadowed other disciplines. This perceived neglect has led to the term ‘lesser-known sports.’

“What we call the lesser-known sports shall also receive equitable attention like we give soccer,” Mahama stated during a media interaction on Sunday.

He further assured the sports community of plans to improve infrastructure, saying, “Let me also assure the sports fraternity that we shall develop our stadium infrastructure for track and field sports. We will fix the deteriorating football pitches and pay stipends to footballers in the Premier League as we promised in 2020.”

Football remains the dominant sport in Ghana, with a significant portion of the Sports Ministry’s budget allocated to the Ghana Football Association, particularly the Black Stars. Mahama pledged to balance this attention across all sports.

In a recent gesture, Mahama donated $10,000 to Ghana’s amputee football team following their Africa Cup of Nations triumph in May 2024.

As the flagbearer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) prepares for the upcoming elections, he aims to gain support by promising a more inclusive approach to sports development in Ghana.
